The Power of Cute

informative slow-paced

There were very good thoughts and threads lost in a repetitive narrative, arguing we live in an era of ambiguity instead of dichotomy, and cute encapsulates that dissonance in appealing ways.

Granted, I prefer sociology to philosophy, but citing Freudian theories got some easy eye rolls. He questions if power should be the only dynamic we use to view the world (at least in western approaches) then dwells on power dynamics repeatedly for chapters. He talks about the cult of childhood without mentioning things like infant mortality rates as part of causality.

I caught myself making wanking motions when he went on a tear about Rousseau. Dislike him all you want- it’s your book- but give me a solid argument, not just a line quote by Humes and personal preference

I found this a good and enjoyable read.

I learned a lot.

It was unnecessarily analytical - fine. Although there were some really missed opportunities in the book. Some reasonings or ideas for being "cute" were omitted.

Still, I enjoyed it for the most part.

Not what I hoped for. Pretentious and overreaching. If you can't explain to me why you think Donald Trump counts as "cute" -- or if he only counts as "cute" because, like your premise about how "cuteness" works, he subverts expectations... then you're doing it all wrong.

Some interesting observations here and then, but by and large it felt like a waste of time.

Came for the Anthony Head audio, want to deduct a point for May calling Trump "cute." At times he felt like an anthropologist studying cute - not knowing about it himself - and getting it wrong.

I did like the early point about how we are increasingly being told of the importance our childhood has on us, which could explain our desire to hold on to childish things.
