I just wrote a really carefully developed rave review of this wonderful book and then the computer burped and it disappeared. I am very sad.
However, it is a rare and lovely book: controlled, wry, funny, heart-breaking, and insightful. It's beautifully written--even the cover is gorgeous!--and I want to go buy myself a copy to keep. Evans manages to take us into Vee's and Noel's worlds, and she creates unprepossessing characters who eventually win our hearts. I plan to read her other books, too!
Two great passages are on page 200 (about Vee's lazy son) and page 243 (where Vee reassures Noel about his guilt). . . but I haven't the heart to type them out again.
Please, though, go buy a copy of this book, read it, and then give it to someone you love.

This is more of a 3.5, because I found it enjoyable and finished the audiobook rather quickly. It is historical fiction, and it follows a poor woman who takes in an orphan during the War.
The war stuff is minimal, and there are a few very funny letters to Churchill scattered throughout. It is mostly the story of a young boy who is exceptional and sweet and honest, looking for a family.

Marvelously drawn characters, vivid scenes of Hone Front life.
Heart warming fun...warm jumper, hot chocolate and read in one sitting fun
4.5 stars for a funny, heartbreaking story of various quirky characters, of various levels of moral development, navigating their difficult lives (often made difficult by themselves). Interestingly, the Blitz is only one more difficulty as their lives are already pretty much a mess. Wonderfully eccentric and engaging.

I didn’t enjoy the book until the very end. I didn’t like any of the characters. The plot didn’t really grab me. I didn’t have to make myself read it but I never felt I had to keep the pages turning either. If you like slice of life books with a historical background you’d probably like this. The ending is satisfying though.
I picked this book up at the library because of the beautiful cover art (NOT the art shown here!) and was pleasantly surprised that the book was quite enjoyable.
finally. feels like it's been ages since I read a book I liked. really enjoyed this one.
