I kept wanting more plot and they kept giving me more delightful humor. I was totally lost in a few places so I’d say I owe the Strugatskys another read through. Some of my favorite bits came in the post script and afterward, but maybe that’s because there was more clarity to those sections.

It's very complicated science fiction. In some places I didn't understand what it was about at all, but in the end it made me think a lot.

Complicated, light and funny stories from world of magicians living among humans. It was a bit in style of Terry Patchet's books, and a bit strange.
Komplikované, ľahké a vtipné príbehy z sveta mágov žijúcich popri ľudoch. Bolo to trochu v štýle kníh Terryho Pratchetta, a naviac trochu divné.

Isto onoliko koliko volim naučnu fantastiku, a pogotovo Strugacke, e pa, isto toliko i mrzim satirična dela. Satira mi je ok, ako se prožima kroz delo, i ako je neka vrsta podteksta.. ali ovo delo Strugackih je čista sprdnja na Sovjetski savez, bez ikakvog plota, bez ikakve karakterizacije.. Samo su nabrojani magični objekti, ludi ljudi, veštice, lešinari.. I u početku me je to oduševilo, ali to je bilo dok sam mislio da sve vodi nečem smislenom.. Ipak, nakon polovine pročitanje knjige, shvatio sam da se ipak sve svodi na jedan ogroman shitpost, tako da sam i batalio.. I dalje vas volim braćo
Kimi hikâyenin içine giremediğim zamanlar olsa da kilometre taşı gibi döşenen şaşırtıcı fikirlerin bulunduğu kısımları epey beğendim. Her kitapta olduğu gibi, bu kitabı da okuduktan sonra bir kere daha başa dönüp tekrar okumakta fayda var; anlamsız görünen yerlerin açıklaması yapılınca önceki olaylar netlik kazanıyor.
Well this is embarassing, but I don't think I "got" the majority of the references in this book. From page one it felt like we were spoofing something, but I don't have the cultural background to know what. Names were said in a joking way, childrens stories littered throughout (I did catch Baba Yaga), and the colorful characters felt like they were stand-ins for ideas or perhaps stereotypes of unfamiliar things. This is the favorite book of a friend and I feel bad being unable to fully appreciate it.
Might be a scifi masterwork but didn't do much for me.
