Like so many short story collections, this one feels more like an editorial project than an authorial conception. Some stories reveal the full talent of the author of the Martian Chronicles. Others, less mature, could have been left unpublished. I will retain the story of the invisible boy, of the woman who wanted so much to learn to write and the eponymous Golden Apples of the Sun, which must have influenced Danny Boyle's Sunshine.

So many great stories. "The Fog Horn." "A Sound of Thunder," one of the great time travel and dinosaur stories (the description of the T-Rex is sublime and awesome). "The Murderer," a great prediction of our always in touch world. And so many more.
"That's life for you...someone always waiting for someone who never comes home. Always someone loving some thing more that that thing loves them. And after a while you want to destroy whatever that thing is, so it can't hurt you no more". Re: sea creature that destroys the lighthouse and the fog horn that mimics it's own lonesome cry.
"Silence happened next. God, it was beautiful...I just rode around feeling of the silence. It's a big bolt of the nicest, softest flannel ever made. Silence...I just sat in my car; smiling, feeling of that flannel with my ears. I felt drunk with Freedom!" Re: a man's technology destruction spree.

This book and I were born in the same year. Unlike me, it has stood the test of time. A varied, enjoyable read. Some of the stories (in particular The Murderer) were prophetic. All very human. Recommend it.
Stories from the golden age
Ray Bradbury is a storyteller with a capital teller. There's a luscious roundness to his prose. Here are collected a bunch of extraordinary tales. They tend toward the magical and allegorical.
