"Lee knew that one sure way to get into trouble of his own was to inquire too quickly into other people's."
Through the years, I have given my son a couple of the books from the His Dark Materials series as I had heard it was an excellent story. So far, he has yet to pick one up. So, I thought I would give it a whirl first and let him know what I thought.
Not really knowing anything about the story, I thought this short story was pretty good. It has adventure, interesting characters, and an exciting ending. From what I can gather, this was the meeting between aeronaut Lee Scoresby and talking polar bear Iorek Byrnison. I think all the animals can talk?? Also, the humans seem to have a daemon-animal partner (Lee's is a hare named Hazel.) They are more than a partnership as they are spiritually attached as well, (reminding me of the animalled in Lauren Beukes Zoo City) where if the animal is harmed or killed, their human is too -- and vice versa. Took me a minute to figure that all out.
I am quite interested to see where this story is headed

Fun little prequel to His Dark Materials about Lee Scoresby and the start of his relationship with Iorek Byrnison. Really enjoyed it as an audiobook, but the “action scene” / shootout in the warehouse was a bit hard to follow in audio form.
I adore Philip Pullman and his stories. I've been wanting to read this for awhile now and it didn't disappoint. I really liked the character of Lee Scoresby and his daemon Hester. This was an engaging short story that also introduced Iorek Byrnison to them. My only criticism is that towards the end of the book Pullman reveals Scoresby's fate that happens during the Lyra books. If someone read this before those, he would definitely have a spoiler.
My biggest beef with the His Dark Materials series is the way it completely abandons a fascinating world for other, less interesting ones. This yarn is a lean western with enough of the character of that world to make it necessary. A great read.
Excellent wee supplemtary tale in the world of the Northern Lights

A nice return to the world of His Dark Materials, after recently finishing the TV series. And with one of my favourite characters Lee Scoresby!
the story of how Lee Scoresby, his rifle and the armored bear Iorek Byrnison came together.
