the les mis reading experience is feeling awash in the most intense wave of tragedy and understanding of the perseverance of the human spirit, love, redemption, compassion, and morality and then immediately getting hit with a hundred pages intricately detailing the parisian sewer system

and yet, it never stops me from coming back time and time again to cry my heart out over these characters. enjolras & grantaire you will always have a very special place in my heart <3

Hugo wrote too many extraneous passages so it was too difficult for me to pull out the story and enjoy it.  I did not enjoy the history, or all of the confused identity twists. 
I enjoyed Part 1&2 and the story of Jean Valjean and Cosette but that was about it. 
The writing never clicked for me.

Antes de nada, recomendar la increíble traducción de Maria Teresa Gallego Urrutia en la edición de Alianza Editorial en dos volúmenes: no solo es fidedigna, sino que además está hecha con muchísimo esmero. Además, creo que es de las pocas ediciones completas y sin censura.

Con esta novela he llorado, he tenido ataques de risa (el borracho de la taberna y su compañero resfriado) y sobre todo, he dormido muy poco porque he sacrificado horas de sueño para poder leer. Buenísimo desarrollo de personajes, planteamientos filosóficos que te hacen para de leer para reflexionar, descripciones geniales y narrativa sencilla pero sin escatimar en detalles. Se nota que Victor Hugo te está contando una historia, porque directamente se dirige a ti, incluso es capaz de jugar con el lector y de gastarle un par de bromas durante la novela. Hay varias digresiones de larga extensión, que pausan la narrativa, pero creo que ayudan al lector a situarse dentro de la historia y a profundizar aún más en el contexto de los personajes.

Por cierto, conseguí comprar unos mapas de la época que marcan las ubicaciones de la novela (de la editorial Aventuras Literarias), que ayudan a orientarte por las calles de París (a tener en cuenta que hay algunas zonas diferentes respecto a la actualidad) y por las alcantarillas.

It was a bit hard to get into and those tangents about random things were sometimes hard to get through (although informative - I learned a lot about 1715 and the Battle of Waterloo), but some parts of it were amazing. I teared up when Gavroche and Eponine died, and I cried when Valjean died at the end
