Despite being a massive Lackey fan for years, this is one trilogy I never picked up, but I'm not quite sure why. Personally it's a good book, but I'm not sure it's quite worth the hype I've seen, particularly compared to my fave Arrows trilogy. Having read a lot of Lackey before there are a lot of repeated ideas, although I know this would have been the OG, hence why they are less fleshed out.

The begining and middle of this book I loved, and I was really into it. However, I wasnt as much of a fan of the last part, mostly because of the change in location. In general I've always been much less of a fan of the "magic" books (like Winds trilogy, by the sword, gryphon trilogy), prefering books set it the Collegia and those that are more herald focused, if you like the magic sides of Valdemar you will definitely love this!

Note from my partner, who heard chunks of the audiobook while I listened but not the whole thing: Vanyel is really whinny, and they could not get over his attitude, really disliking the book.

Whilst he's a kid and has a lot of maturing to do, I see their point in this one, if you like emotionally mature MCs this isn't for you.
