I’ve tried and tried to like it. Over halfway through and nothing has happened and no character is that compelling.

So many elements of this book pulled me out of the story as I was reading. The prose was repetitive and the plethora of editing errors distracting. The pacing was off and there was an odd overuse of ellipses. Not my favorite reading experience.

I wasn't originally going to pick this one up given the low reviews but after hearing it was a likely necessary read prior to reading Born of Blood and Ash, the conclusion of the FAF series, I relented. I was pleasantly surprised that I actually liked the plot of this book a lot. Cat and mouse duet trope, morally grey MMC, stubborn and sassy FMC, interesting political backdrop and magic. I immediately spotted a lot of similarities and Easter eggs for the FAF/FBAA universe. Lots of similarities between the Deminyens and the Ancients, the concept of "feeding," the allusion of Calista being born divine/starborn (aka being born in a shroud). I really liked the flow and pace of this one. However parts were really predictable, I didn't love the blatant disprespect of Calista's consent to spending time with Thorne (though I did love their chemistry and banter).
3.5 stars due to the clear lack of editing. I mean seriously, so many typos. However, glad I read it prior to BOBAA and I look forward to reading the second installment of the Awakening series.
