Somehow in this short book I got to know and be interested in not just the protagonist but her birth and adoptive parents, her grandparents, high-school friends, and many others she had relationships with at various times. I wanted more of almost every character and part - yet it was still a satisfying and compelling overall story.
This storyline was a little hard to follow, but eventually it started coming together toward the end. This was an excellent book that provided insight into some of the struggles of native/indigenous people, specifically femme presenting native/indigenous people. Happy to add this as my first book read in 2023.
Enjoyed the story and flawed af characters. Audiobook narrator is almost too bubbly, but in a way that I think works great for the protagonist’s big personality.
A series of short stories, all related to the titular Ruby. Nothing is chronological- it time jumps all over the place.
I was so impressed by this book - from the get-go it captivated me with its careful and pristine character development of Ruby and her relatives. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was fabulous in bringing Ruby to life in a believable/relatable way. If I could give this 10 stars I would - easily one of the best reads of the last 3 years for me. Highly recommend!

I loved Ruby’s character throughout the book! We follow her through different stages of her life, with each chapter being written with the point if view of someone who was important in shaping Ruby. The non linear layout of the chapters can be confusing for the reader, especially at the beginning of the book. We often dive into someone else’s life and just when we get attached to this new character the chapter ends and we jump to someone else (which can sometimes be frustrating for the reader). In the end, the only person we feel like we know is Ruby.
This is my first time reading a book focusing on the theme of Indigenous adoption, an important part of the Canadian history with the Sixties Scoop. I am extremely grateful to have read this novel. Lisa Bird-Wilson shows through the profoundly human and imperfect character of Ruby how being adopted into a white family impacted her life, and how she is constantly searching for her home and where she belongs.
