This came highly recommended and it certainly didn't disappoint. Fascinating, beguiling, educational and overall a lovely read. These are fantastic animals and if you have ever had the slightest curiosity about them, read this!!
I will appreciate visiting aquariums so much more now.
If you're interested in someone stroking an octopus for 200 pages I highly recommend it. If you're interested in the wonder of consciousness, as the book advertises, skip it. The book's subtitle didn't lie when it describes itself as surprising. It surprised me that an author who clearly knows how to write can approach the subject of her book in so dull a fashion that the most interesting bits of the book consisted of her talking about sea creatures other than her beloved octopuses. Trying to sell the obvious question "I wonder what the octopus is thinking" as a surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness is an insult to any reader seriously interested in the intelligence of octopuses.
4.5 stars. Never would have thought a book about octopuses would make me laugh, cry, and literally gasp out loud. But that’s Sy Montgomery for you!

Recommended by a friend, I found this book immensely readable and fascinating. I have heard that octopuses are intelligent, but knew very little about them. This book is not so much a book of factual information about octopuses, but more a memoir of the author's time studying them and spending time getting to know the people, octopuses and other creatures inhabiting an aquarium in New England (Boston I think).
she starts the book warning against anthropomorphizing animals and then spends the entire book doing just that. :/ it was just a little too on the other side of hokey for me, I fear.
although I will say, I was engaged and critically thinking (emphasis on critical) the entire way through. I was mad and I disagreed and she always kept me hoping that she would surely turn it around in the next chapter. also what a delight to learn so much about the behind the scenes at the NE Aquarium and the fabulous team that keeps her afloat.

This book is really good if you aren't drawn in by the title, which I think is misleading. If you want a story about humans interacting with octopuses this is very good. If you want the neurobiology and psychology (or soul, if you believe in that business) of the mollusks, you'll be disappointed. I enjoyed the book very much, although [spoiler alert]
Once Kali died my heart wasn't in it.
I read this for the Read Harder Challenge book about nature but so much of it takes place in an aquarium, so in an unnatural setting, I'm not sure it fits. 🤔
