This book has got something for almost everyone: a stalwart, feisty heroine, a possible romantic interest with a true-blue game warden, veterans, great dogs, Shakespeare quotes, heists, murder, art, Vermont lore, and more. It's all woven together with skill to make an enjoyable ride from start to finish. Many mysteries have saggy parts, but this brisk read will keep you going without a pause. It's a good debut mystery from someone who's absorbed the best parts and can show how it's done.
" A one-sit read." Lisa Gardner was quoted for this book. Took me longer then that, but was a book I throughly enjoyed reading. Looking forward to picking up the next in this series

I love dogs. I love the outdoors. And mysteries are my favorite read. The book hit all the marks for me. Great first in a series novel - I hope the others are such enjoyable reads.
A solid first book with a setting that is understandable, and characters that only stretch the bounds of credulity a little bit.
Nice series start. Mercy is an Afghanistan vet who adopted her dead fiance's bomb sniffer dog, Elvis. They're both still dealing with PTSD and depression a year later when they find some things in the Vermont hills. They meet Game Warden Troy Warner and his rescue dog Susie Bear. Mystery and relationships start.
I loved A Borrowing of the Bones. Mercy Carr was such an endearing character, and I think I might have had a crush on game warden Troy. But even more than these two, I loved their dogs. Elvis and Susie Bear were working dogs, and boy, did they prove their worth, from finding danger to search and rescue duties to protecting their people. The Vermont setting was charming and vividly drawn, chockablock with wonderful supporting characters, chief among them the swoonworthy Captain Thrasher and Mercy's veterinarian grandmother, Patience. I also really enjoyed the Nancy Drew-esque descriptions of the food and drink Mercy and Troy (and Elvis and Susie Bear) turned to for sustenance. Can't wait for the next Mercy Carr book.
