This book was just... okay. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. I did love the dogs!

So I picked up this book from my library because I really liked the cover and I liked that it had military characters. It took about 30% of the book to get into it but once I did, I really fell in love with the characters and their dogs. This author did a good job of bringing you into the fold and letting you feel what each character was going through. I found myself crying as Mercy was trying to navigate her way through a serious loss as well as her PTSD. I really felt how this character had a difficult time trying to connect with her fiancé’s dog Elvis and you got a glimpse into just what some of our military personnel deal with and what it must feel like to have survivors guilt. Add in a funny and caring game warden and his Newfoundland dog and you have all the makings for what could be  a phenomenal series. This author does a great job of providing just enough mystery, secrets, and camaraderie. I cannot wait to read more books from this author, and see how each character grows and overcomes all that they have been through.

This was a great book and a good start of a new series! Mercy is a retired Army MP who has returned home to Vermont to heal and grieve after losing her fiance in Afghanistan. But she's not entirely alone. She has Elvis, her fiance's bomb-sniffing dog who is also retired from the Army. Elvis has PTSD from the war and from losing his master but he's slowly getting better. One of the things that helps is the daily hikes he takes in the Vermont wilderness with Mercy.

Except one day, Elvis discovers an abandon baby in the woods. Along with some old bones and possibly a bomb. This unravels a mystery that Mercy can't ignore.

The book sucks you in right away, you really like the characters and it keeps you guessing til the end. I really loved Elvis and Mercy and can't wait to read book 2!

This was a great start to a series I jumped into not knowing where it was going to go, other than it had a dog and a woman in it. Another reader I trust reads this series, and I was looking for something new. I truly enjoyed this story, and I'm going to get the next one right away.

I would read more of this series, because it was an easy read, and I enjoy mystery and dog books. However, the book felt a bit long, and had some random comments that rubbed me the wrong way (how the main character "owes it to herself to get married and have children"; how the main character is attractive because she can simultaneously eat a lot of junk food and not usually care about fashion but still be conventionally attractive; etc). Part of how drawn-out that this book is might be because of first-book-in-a-series syndrome, in which all the characters and the setting need to be introduced in a way that makes it seem like the author is envisioning something more like a TV drama than a mystery series of books.
