I knew Miss Chue was an important character and I was right. Her story is so sad tho I almost teared up when she thought she wouldn't be useful anymore. MISS CHUE YOU'LL ALWAYS BE LOVED

Maomao finally coming around about her feelings for Jinshi was such a rewarding part. I can't wait to see how things will go for these two now.

This series has been incredibly consistent in layering mystery on mystery and keeping grounded in a reasonable amount of science. It's still a fantasy at the core, but I love that it can spend so many volumes building up something I'd usually have no interest in like locust swarms and crop damage, and make it interesting and impactful on a large scale, while connecting it to isolated mysteries within each volume, which connect to other mysteries foreshadowed volumes before, etc. All this while continually introducing fun, unique characters with fully fleshed stories of their own, and building up Maomao and Jinshi's growing connection with each other. This is probably my new favorite example of how good serialized light novels could actually be.
