slow-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Strong character development? It's complicated
- Loveable characters? It's complicated
- Diverse cast of characters? No
- Flaws of characters a main focus? No
3.25
The two main characters were nice enough but dare I say boring? Definitely a slower book, but I didn’t feel any particular burn was present though the author kept telling us so. Felt like all the other characters had more life, unfortunately. The epilogue was quite touching though.
Moderate: Infidelity
Minor: Death and War

I loved the nod to the Bedwyn Saga in this. I did wonder how that terrible comment would be overcome and I did like the explanation. Not the strongest of her books, but I did enjoy it.

*4.5 stars. This was the most character-heavy, plot-light romance I’ve read in a LONG time. The romance was super slow burn but I loved it. The way Lucas is head-over-heels instantly for her was so refreshing. And the side characters! Jenny was a standout. I can’t wait to keep going in this series.

The author has written an extremely quiet book.
Very low angst, with a large number of characters that makes it difficult to keep everyone straight. Add to that detailed explanation of general every day occurances, and realize that nothing really happens in this simple, calm story.

I wanted more here. I just didn’t understand why they loved each other. It was like everyone told them they should be together enough times that they caved. I was going to rate it in the 3.5 star range because I wanted more emotional development but the epilogue made me cry so 3.75 stars.
Graphic: Death, Infidelity, Sexual content, and Death of parent
Moderate: Cursing, Sexism, Terminal illness, Grief, Pregnancy, War, and Classism
Minor: Ableism

There’s something about the more recent Mary Balogh books that feels slower and less enjoyable. I want to like them more than I am at the moment
