the beginning of this book felt super heavy and not very beginner friendly for someone just entering the world of historical fiction/someone who knows very little about planes and pilot jargon. the beginning also, at times, feels more like a collection of short stories rather than one overarching plot.

that being said, the book pretty quickly pulls you in and builds suspense that keeps you turning pages, waiting to see what happens next. i was engaged; the pacing was great and the characters were well written, i think.

there were some plot points that didn’t really go anywhere, and i honestly think they could have been left out (most of the soyuz-apollo stuff) but the entire reading experience was fun, tense, and rewarding. i do wish some loose ends were tied up better, and those are knocking the rating down from a 3.5 to a hard 3.

overall, i’m glad i read this book as a long time fan of chris hadfield.

While Hadfield certainly knows his subject, I found myself skipping some of the more technical parts, in order to get to the story. That being said, the last two chapters certainly captivated me, although I think getting there could have been quicker. Also, it’s an interesting premise of including real characters into the story and I think that it works.
