I’m very interested in reading the short story this started as.

Bad Cree is a creepy story that at its heart is about grief and finding healing in female friendships & family. I found it particularly interesting how the concept of grief is looked at as “bad” and how the characters have to learn that having “bad” of you doesn’t make you ”bad” as a whole.

I don’t really get creeped out as much by books because my brain animates things less scary but I did find some of the imagery to be quite creepy. As I movie I could never watch it.

I had heard good things about this book, but it exceeded all expectations. The Indigenous storytelling and complex yet strong family bonds set this story apart from others. I loved the matriarchs in this novel. The support that they provided for their families felt so real. John’s descriptions of everyday life made me so nostalgic for being a kid at the beach with family, including the smack talk over nightly cribbage games. It was emotional, yet so grounded. I’m going to be recommending this book for years.
