These stories are fun, raw material and with a rather dark twist. I did a double take to make sure I had not misread the sentence. Well, if you are looking for something Jo March would write about English society this is it. I would definitely read the more fleshed out versions of these ideas. Especially the "A letter from a young Lady, whose feelings being too strong for her judgment led her into the commission of errors which her heart disapproved."

Overall score - 3 stars.

Jack and Alice - 3.5 stars
Henry and Eliza - 3 stars
The Beautifull Cassandra - 2.75 stars
Letter #1 - 3 stars
Letter #2 - 3.25 stars
Letter #3 - 2.5 stars

This book from the Penguin Little Black Classics range is a compilation of some of Austen’s short pieces written in her youth. Some of them, such as ‘Jack and Alice’ and ‘Henry and Eliza’ were delightful, but overall they were very clearly written for personal enjoyment rather than an audience. Still enjoyable for anyone who likes Austen.

Let me just note, that for juvenilia, this is incredibly good. You can clearly sense Austen's nascent wit, which is what makes her such an incredible novelist as an adult. However, you can also see this childhood creativity and sometimes absurdity, generally absent in her later work—incredible writings from little Miss Austen.

*spoilers ahead*

Jack and Alice
Overall engaging and interesting, very Austen-esque but the poisoning at the end truly took me by surprise.

Henry and Eliza
How do you forget you had a child and then adopt that same child? Just how. Honestly, though Eliza was definitely onto something with her joyful disposition.

The beautiful Cassandra
Funny, short, sweet. Cassandra is a little troublemaker and I love her for it.

From A young Lady in distress'd Circumstances to her friend
Lady Greville is an incredibly unpleasant woman and I hope she mysteriously passes away and Maria can live a life where she is not constantly being talked down to <3

From a Young Lady very much in love to her Friend
Men used to write love letters good enough for girls to fall in love, now all they do is gaslight.

A Letter from a Young Lady, whose feelings being too strong for her Judgment led her into the commission of Errors which her heart disapproved
I am sorry, she murdered her whole family but now has to stop cause she is getting married? Girl, just don't kill your sister, come on...

I feel like you probably have to be a fan of Austen before reading this.
Also, I read the whole thing and if you asked me to tell you a single thing that happened, I couldn't.

This wouldn't be entirely fair to compare to Austen's later works, so as it stands it's a little like charming gibberish to me. Still very sweet.
