A pleasant light read of the protagonist's ponderings as she visits Japan with her mother. I enjoyed Au's writing. There is reflective thinking with a pace that allowed for me to relate to her situation.

The writing in this is so observant it is almost mesmeric, so sensuous you feel nourished. Virtually nothing happens but you are embedded so deeply in the narrator's head it doesn't matter; you feel you are walking around Tokyo not only with her but inside her. I want to read this again, in one sitting, in the total quiet and without disturbance -- perhaps in the bath. That is the way to read this book.
