Don’t read this in public unless you don’t mind crying in public.
If I ever have the opportunity to lead a late elementary or middle school book club this book will be at the top of the list.
This is a book of poetry that provides an inside prospective of the plight of the undocumented children in this country. Though it is fiction, it is factually based.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this heartbreaking novel in verse. Nine-year-old Betita and her parents fled the drug cartels in Mexico. Now in East LA, her father is taken by ICE in a raid at his job. When they attempt to go visit him through a fence in Tijuana, a missed exit leads Betita and her mother into custody as well. The inhumane conditions threaten to break their spirits, and they find themselves separated. The details are truly heart wrenching, and even with a young main character middle school readers should all read this.

What a tender, heartbreaking book in verse!
Really enjoyed this book. Super quick read, but filled with so much insight. Though viewed through a little girl's eyes, the whole story carries a weight that many families have to deal with. I think it is very digestible for younger audiences, especially for the ones who are currently going through something similar and need to be seen or understood.
Many of the poems made me cry.
