So, [a:January James|20464975|January James|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1634886863p2/20464975.jpg] lets you know straight out the gate that there will be a cliffhanger and this will be one hell of a ride. And boy, she did not disappoint. I did not see any part of that reveal coming. I am just shook in all the best ways
January brought such complex characters, that you really didn’t know who you could trust and who you shouldn’t.
Vivian Gillespie will do anything for her sister Peggy. She has committed all that she is into taking care of her. After trying everything they could think of, to help ease Peggy’s pain, a once in a lifetime opportunity springs new hope, a wonder drug that could potentially cure her sister. The only problem is that this drug, is on a remote island filled will billionaires who think the world revolves around them, and it is not open to the public.
After her family convinces her to take a chance, she fudges her CV and applies for a job and gets it. From the outside things seem like a miracle, but the more she learns about the island the more she is quickly learning that everything is not as it seems.
”I’m not letting anyone else take you home when you’re dressed like that.”…”What I mean is, you look fucking Lethal in that dress…”
Then there is Rupert Thorn. His family is in the drug business and he is adamant about not truly being involved in it. He is focused on pushing back against the “family business” as much as he can as long as he can keep getting away with it. Especially when it comes to the shady things that his father and brother are up to.
I really loved the instant connection that he felt for Vivian, even before seeing her. I love the dark and mysteriousness the island gives off. I enjoyed Minty, she was a fun side-character. I am hoping to see more of her in the second book.

Jagged Thorns was my introduction to January James, and it did not disappoint!
To quickly summarize, Jagged Thorns follows the lead heroine Vivian as she navigates the elite and mysterious world of The Isle of Crow as its new island tour guide. Forced to work alongside Rupert Thorn, a member of the infamous Thorn family, tensions rise, and lines are crossed. With ulterior motives of her own, Vivian seeks to undercover the island mystery the Thorns will stop at nothing to keep hidden.
This was a thrilling and sexy read that I devoured in less than two days! I enjoyed the world-building and found it gave just enough without becoming filler. The romance is a slow burn, but I think the build-up is worth the wait, and it teases you just enough to keep you wanting more. And I do want more!
You're warned in the introduction of the book that this ends with a cliffhanger, but damn... It's not just a cliffhanger, but a "WTF?!" moment I didn't see coming! Now to impatiently wait for the summer for the final two installments of this trilogy to be released.

This book is why I do not like CLIFFHANGERRRRSSSSS...
Then again.. I cannot wait until book 2 because fuck yes that is how you end a goddamn good book!
There was soo much in this book.
The characters..
The world building which in this book is definitely needed..
The angst..
The "I hate you" vibes..
Broody men..
Kickass FMC..
And phew that slow burn with just a sprinkle of spice, yes please!
I just.. I can't.
It ended so damn abruptly that I kept tapping for the next page but there was no more (silent crying here)
I was totally engrossed in this story. These characters and this world.
There will be no spoilers here so if you want a slow burn, angsty, gothic vibe book then I highly highly encourage you to get this book.
Take a chance and take a tour on the island of billionaires..
Will you survive the Isle of Crow?

Nobody talk to me for the rest of today. Seeing as I am in no way getting enough sleep after binging this book in one sitting and will inevitably be in a book hangover. (Currently 4:40am and my alarm is set for 715
This is my first book by @thejanuaryjames and I absolutely devoured it.
This is a dark romance that leaves end on a major cliffhanger so make sure you check your trigger warnings before you read. This book is full of mystery, lust, and so many secrets that keep you turning those pages. I need book two!

Rupert is dark and brooding, doing everything he can to go against his family.
Vivian is brightness and sunshine, selfless to the end, doing what she can for her family.
Then their worlds collide.
I was initially unsure I was going to like this - the prologue hinted at Rupert and his family dynamic but without any real understanding of just how messed up things were. However as the story progressed and we learnt more about the extremes Rupert’s family would go to I became hooked. Not only because of the danger but because of the brooding intensity of the attraction between Rupert and Viv. They were both fighting for their own causes whilst fighting their forbidden attraction too and it was beautiful.
The chemistry and tension between them both was gripping as the author began to peel layers away and show the true characters. There was the hint of a happy ending where both the readers and characters would get what they want but then January threw in some twists and revelations and snapped all my optimism away leaving me with a cliffhanger from hell and a desperate need for book 2.
I received this book as an ARC and honestly I didn't know what to expect but DANG it was good. This is book 1 in a series so it does end on a cliffhanger but it does rope you in from the start. This book is about the Thorn family who lives on an island and is working on an experimental drug. Vivian gets a job on the island as they are trying to open the island to show elite and royalty their process but Vivian has a different agenda. She meets one of the sons Rupert who is not a fan of the tours taking place. When accidents happen and plans start to change we are left with a big cliffhanger at the end.
Overall I really did enjoy this book and I found it intriguing and captivating till the very end.

Rupert & Vivian
Wow. Just WOW! I had to gather my thoughts to write this review because they were all over the place. First, this is the sloooowwwwweesssstttttttt burn I've ever, EVER read! I almost want to add the % just to prove my point, but I won't. If you go into this book knowing you won't have a Happily Ever After, you'll be good. If you're also looking for a dark romance with tons of smut, this isn't it.
"I closed my eyes. "What did you say?" "Once," he whispered. "Just once."
Jagged Thorns reminds me of when you watch a show and you don't get everything in the first episode. They have to lay down the ground work, introduce the characters, let them unfold a little, then start inserting their claws into you so you're hooked. THAT is how this book unfolded for me. I wasn't sure in the beginning, but as the bread crumbs were dropped, I kept following. Eventually I was hooked and had to know what the hell was happening.
"I keep telling myself it's a good pain," he said, his voice tinged with desperation. "At least if we feel some pain, we know we've lived."
There is a magical drug on an island full of millionaires and no one is allowed to go. Until now. Vivian has been hired to be a tour guide for their first visitors ever, but she has ulterior motives. Her little sister is in chronic pain and in dire need of ANYTHING to help her live a normal life. As her caretaker, Vivian is determined to do anything to help her.
"But you are the only thing worth keeping."
Rupert is a handsome man from one of the most prominent families on this secret island. He has obligations and duties to fulfill, but has a hard time because of greedy hearts in the family. He wants to make the world a better place. He is also promised in a sort of arranged marriage setup between the prominent families to keep the money from leaving their bloodlines.
"You were the most delicious-looking creature in that room, butterfly."
My heart was breaking by the end of the book. I die for that happy ending, but seeing as how there was a GIANT cliff hanger, I'll have to wonder for the next 6 months. Will I be reading the next book? Yes, yes I will.
TROPES:
- Arranged Marriage
- Billionaire Romance
