La position de Zola vis-à-vis des Halles est beaucoup plus ambivalente que celle qu'il tenait sur les grands travaux haussmanniens. Il entretient la contradiction entre la beauté de la nourriture, qu'il admire, et l'échelle inhumaine du marché parisien. Encore une fois, tous les personnages en prennent pour leur grade et personne n'est attachant, à part peut-être la maraîchère, madame François qui apparaît une ou deux fois en potentielle salvatrice, naturellement ignorée par les personnages principaux. Des centaines de pages d'anti-anti-dépresseur...

Les Halles, the Parisian food marketplace, is a vivid character in this 19th century tale. The human characters were well drawn; the plot a bit less intriguing to me.

Как это пишут книжные блоггеры - 2/20, 11-я по счёту, читаю, правда, вразнобой, но в голове временную линию держу.

И решил я однажды периодически перекладывать лютые штудии романом-другим, и потом решил - а почему бы не перекладывать классическим романом? И совершил набег на библиотеку. Там здорово удивились, даже ключ от книгохранилища выдали - в базовом фонде это собрание уже не стояло. Судьба у этих книг тоже интересная - был завод полиметаллов, была там библиотека, потом завод расформировался, книги передали в дом культуры, там тоже библиотеку уменьшали (помещений было мало) и книги отдали абонентам просто так. Потом помещения появились и абонентов призвали по желанию книги вернуть - многие вернули. Отсюда у книг много маркеров, как минимум, два штампа разных библиотек, штамп "Проверено", который ставили на возврате - а ещё многие абоненты на радостях нанесли свои экслибрисы. История!

А о самой книге ничего не сказал. Очень хорошая! Особо советую обратить внимание на продуктовые метафоры, сопутствующие персонажам и сюжетным поворотам.

Didn't care for this classic work. The highlights for me were the wonderful descriptions of food and the outdoor market of Les Halles. I didn't find the story interesting apart from the short few pages of political discussions. This was a tough book for me to power through, felt like I would never finish it.
