I liked it. Simple as that. Morgan was interesting if somewhat the same as Iain in the first book. I enjoyed the beginning with Amalie and Morgan getting to know each other despite their differences. Amalie much like Annie in the first book was very young in age but also in life experience. It definitely shows even more so with her blind faith in how A and B could never do such a thing cause C would never allow it for example. Having grown up in a convent.. well I couldn't exactly hate her for it but neither was it super endearing. She didn't get on my nerves where as Annie did.

Pamela Clare signe encore une fois un roman dense, qui sort de l'ordinaire. Elle place son histoire dans un contexte méconnu, que l'on voit pour ainsi dire jamais dans la romance. J'ai particulièrement aimé ce soin apporté aux descriptions du contexte historiques et aux différents évènements qui parsèment le livre. Ce que j'aime aussi, c'est que ses personnages ne sont pas manichéens, un camp n'est pas "meilleur" que l'autre.
Le questionnement de Morgan m'a semblé très juste, et apporte une touche vraiment intéressante au livre. La romance est belle, classique, sans doute trop à mon goût, mais je n'ai plus trop l'habitude de la romance historique, et je trouve surtout la traduction parfois vieillotte.
Une bonne lecture dans l'ensemble donc, avec un héros viril à souhait, et une héroïne courageuse.

the story fucking DRAGGED in the middle, i almost stopped reading but thankfully i didn't.
MMC pushed away for too long, even tried to abandon her and i didn't like that one bit, though he did redeem himself in the end. i
couldn't help but compare morgan to nicholas (MMC from ride the fire), nicholas would NEVER abandon bethie or even think about it. morgan wasn't a bad MMC by any means, i understood his actions and i probably would have done the same if i were in his place but he didn't measure upto nicholas for me.
the FMC was perfect as all FMCS are.

Another wonderful French and Indian war story. I'm giving 5 stars for the great writing, love how I can see everything in my mind. The descriptions are absolutely wonderful and such good epilogue endings!

While the setting of the conflict between the British and the French in the American Colonies is interesting and original, the story and romance are not as enjoyable as the first book.
Morgan and Amalie's relationship didn't grab me, mainly because the heroine, Amalie, is too naive, innocent and simpering. She lacks the strength of will and backbone that characterized Annie in book one. Morgan is the most level-headed of the MacKinnon brothers and his relationship with Amalie takes on the same flavor - a tad boring with no real tension or chemistry.
Moreover, the prisoner turned undercover spy turned wrongly convicted for treason plot is predictable and too drawn out. Nevertheless, it was great catching up with the secondary characters. Iain and Annie and their growing family as well as Connor and Joseph, the MacKinnon's adopted Mahican brother.
Wentworth is as smarmy as ever but somehow, he still manages to intrigue me. I cannot help wondering if he will ever truly redeem himself.
All in all, Clare is a wonderful storyteller but this is an uninspired follow up to Surrender. Hope that Defiant will be better.

Morgan MacKinnon is the second brother and now head of the Rangers, scouting for the British during the French and Indian wars. The French captured him, set him to be tortured, and then to be given to the Abenaki to be burned at the stake. Amalie is a young French woman under the guardianship of the fort's commander who nurses Morgan, healing him though she has doubts when she knows his ultimate fate.
The author has done such an excellent job in portraying the shifting loyalties and conflicts of this war. Malcolm is forced to fight for the British, his traditional enemy as a Highland Scot whose family supports the Stuarts. He is sympathetic to the French, traditional allies of the Catholic Scots but loyal to his brothers and fellow Rangers. Amalie is convent-bred but part French and part Abenaki so she is stuck between two different peoples. The battles and customs described are mostly historically accurate and add to the tension throughout the story. I'd like to see more books set in this time period, but this series is terrific.

I actually enjoyed this book better than Surrender. Amalie and Morgan made such a sweet couple. And I loved Morgan even though I totally ignored him in the last book. Amalie was sweet.
Let's just say it was a great entertainment and I would read it again and leave it at that.
