Kenny and Han have been best friends FOREVER, and currently roommates and best bros. Kenny has a very abusive girlfriend who hates Han, and Han has just lost his job and is worried about getting deported by ICE now that his sponsored green card is out of the picture. When Kenny offers to marry Han to solve his immigration problems, will the two best friends realize that they are actually in love with each other? Will abusive ex Jackie ruin everything? And can they find their way to a happy-ever-after?

Ok, so this is a hard one. I like Kenny and Han, and I'm rooting for them to make it work. Friends-to-lovers will ALWAYS be my jam. But the enormous part of the plot that was Jackie and her abuse really made this a difficult book to read and caused issues with the emotional balance and tone. I 100% think that domestic abuse and that men being domestically abused is an important topic!! But the tone shifts were rocky in this one, and the way the abuse was at times used for cheap drama was offputting.

Also, the speed at which everything was rushed was a bit too breakneck for me. I think it would have worked better for me if they'd done a small legal ceremony to get the green card started, and then a larger wedding down the road when their relationship was more secure and longer-established? It would have given more distance from the Jackie plot too.

Anyway, happy for Kenny & Han. Just some of the surrounding plot and emotional-calibration choices weren't executed the best for me personally.

📚 Review: Ugh. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Sonora Reyes. They are such a great writer. You fall in love with the characters, feel the pain they feel, and feel all the joy with them. This book was so timely, and dealt with some really tough topics, but still left me feeling so hopeful and happy at the end. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a queer romance with three dimensional conflict and characters you will get to know and love.

This book tore me apart and then put me back together again. I love this author’s writing and knew this would be a good book but I was a bit apprehensive to read it. Han and Kenny’s friendship is so pure and I loved their flirtatious scenes together. As heartbreaking as some of the story was, I am so happy with how it ended. Reyes covers some incredibly heavy topics with care. The characters felt real to me. Heads up, this story contains a few explicit scenes, so don’t be surprised when they sneak up!

Please read this book y’all!

This book is a mess
with bizarrely inappropriate timing for extremely under negotiated kink discovery? Lol
