This five-star rating has something of nostalgia in it. Don't get me wrong: it's a good book, and if I were reading it for the first time today I would probably give it four stars. But instead it is the beloved book of my fifteen-year-old self, lost to me for many years, and finally returned through the magic of a new edition. The prodigal book returned! So I can overlook the fact that the book loses urgency in its final third, and the fact that it contains two long, semi-comic set pieces that fit poorly with the rest of Chambers's fleeting, nimble narrative. I can give it a fifth star because it changed my life when I was a teenager, and because it lingered in my memory for nearly twenty years, and because the love between Hal and Barry feels as strong to me now as it did back then.

I watched the film then realized it was a book and had to read it but couldn’t find it anywhere in the US, so I was so happy to find it in Europe!
I enjoyed reading this so much. Profound and strange and beautiful and tragic! Definitely not like anything I’ve ever read. Like the movie, I think it starts stronger than it ends, but still a good read throughout!
