2021: Halfway through and the mystery is solved, or is it? Just delightful, as usual some read-aloud lines, along w some examination of shell-shocked veterans, and the confounding relations between women and men.

2024: This is a thumping good mystery, as well as character study and social commentary on life in England for some after The Great War. It does not achieve the greatness of her later works. But it's a strong step in their direction.

I think this may be my new choice of a book to recommend as an entry to the series. It doesn't have the appalling racism of Whose Body and Unnatural Death, and Wimsey isn't as annoying as he is in the earlier books. (Or is that because he's become dear to me by this point?)
