قصتي المفضلة لشيرلوك

'I am pleased to think that I shall be able to free society from any further effects of his presence, though I fear that it is at a cost which will give pain to my friends, and especially, my dear Watson, to you.'

Well, my heart is broken. I swear, a piece of writing this short has no right to be so upsetting. It's a credit to the author and the characters that in what basically amounts to a standalone epilogue (seemingly), you understand and feel the intense emotions, love, loyalty, friendship, commitment between Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Honestly to me this read as a desperate last attempt at a man who is fully aware of his fate, longing to cherish the last moments with his favourite person.

The one single interaction between Holmes and Moriarty has to be one of the most powerful I've ever read. The fierce, fiery back and forth dialogue, every word chosen to perfection to demonstrate their intense face-off. Everything, in a matter of possibly less than one page. The author does an incredible job at getting across the capacity and danger of Moriarty in Sherlock's description of him to Watson, and you really get a sense of Watson's intense admiration of Holmes, and the desperate grief at the loss of his friend and companion.

I'm leaving off a star because personally I thought it would have been more effective to have this as the ending of a full length novel. As it is, it feels somewhat sparse structurally. I don't know the context of the original publication so that could be unfair but I can only assess it as a contemporary reader.

absolutely nothing *~*researchy*~* to see here; an ongoing reading list
1. A Study in Scarlet 2.5/5
2. The Hound of the Baskervilles 5/5
3. The Adventure of the Final Problem 4/5

A very different kind of Holmes story in one key way: there was no crime to solve. The end of the first part of the Holmesian canon, and an unpredictable one at that. It was quite masterful that Doyle managed to insert Holmes' greatest nemesis, Moriarty, in this story, and not make it feel like a deus ex machina. I also find it confounding that he shares the same name as his brother - James Moriarty.

My heart is shattered, though I already knew what would happen. I'm glad that Holmes finally found someone of his caliber to work against, and I was really happy that we were finally introduced to Moriarty. I had been awaiting that moment for a while now,

Though I liked the story and found the ending heart breaking, I wish it would have been a novel instead of a short story. It would have let place for more character's depth on Moriarty's part and I would have liked to know more about Watson's feelings about everything that was going on.

Probably the best of the stories in the memoirs collection, but maybe because it is now over one hundred years old, it does feel dated and musty, maybe its time to retire Holmes and move on? Anyway next up the Hound of the Baskervilles.

I really liked this, I think I am beginning to understand the language a lot more. The ending surprised me, but didn’t really upset me. Tears only began to form in my eyes when I started to compare the similarities between quotes and events from the stories to the BBC adaption of Sherlock (Which has ruined my life 🙃🙃) because I feel such a strong connection to those versions of the characters, so strong that I feel as if I love them so much it hurts.
Overall, a good story, but a little anticlimactic at the end, and I wish we could have had a much stronger, extended ending.
