I bought this book for my boys because it has such a wonderful message. I had no idea my boys would love it as much as they do...
"what if I were a squishy bug?"
"what if I were a squishy bug?"
I love this book. I bought as an Easter gift for my 1 year old as he's not a massive fan of chocolate but he loves books.
The story is a conversation between Large (a mummy/daddy/guardian fox) and Small (the child). Neither character is sexed so it could be any parent and child relationship which I think is very universal. I do voices for the characters when I read this - Small has a little squeaky voice and Large a gentle calm voice. My son finds this funny and checks it is me doing the voices. Their conversation is Small questioning Large's love and Large reassuring Small that "No matter what" Large will always love Small.
My son loves the beautiful pictures. They are bright and beautifully drawn and each page has a lot of detail. The last page has embossed silver stars that shimmer.
He often picks this book for his bedtime story. It's a lovely story to read before bed to make a young child feel safe and no that no matter what their large will love them.

Sweet message, but I did not enjoy the illustrations. Read to one of my grade 7 classes, and it was a flop.
Due to my initial confusion over whether the figure on the cover was a kangaroo or a fox, I never got around to actually opening this book. When I finally did, I was immediately struck by the language-- the parent animal is called Large and the child animal is called Small.
I quirked my eyebrows up at that at first (why not just say Mom or Dad?) but within seconds came to my senses and then became almost euphoric. Here was a sweet, loving book that didn't specify either gender or familial relationship! This adult and child, regardless of gender and kinship status, love each other "no matter what". That is awesome. It's awesome for moms, for dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, for lovely people who don't fit into or biased gender binary, for any kind of guardian, whether blood-related or not.
Also, I'm now pretty sure they're foxes. But you know what? Who gives a crap. After all, when it comes to baby books, I'm definitely sure that "all you need is love"!

This is a very lovable book. This is one of my personal favorites out of the many books my daughter has gotten to have read to her and also, the colors of the art light up as if it is glow-in-the-dark if you have on a purple light in the room! This was an oddly helpful distraction at times when going for a late-night bottle. The story is very heartwarming and cute. I bought it specifically for the "I love you and there's no strings attached to that" message. It definitely delivers that and even elicits a chuckle, too.
