I love classic gay books and reading about gay ppl in times of old! Also love how Sarah navigated her gender presentation.
Is this the most amazing book I've ever read? No, but it was written in 1965 about 19th century women who fall in love with each other, and there's no tragedy and no strife and they just get to have a lovely love story, the end. Read this book, and then read all of the appendices, and the introduction.
I put this book on my list of must reads a few months ago. I cannot remember where I first heard of it but believe it was recommended by a coworker. My local library does not have a copy but thankfully we can get loans from other libraries if they are willing to loan. I enjoyed this book very much even with the writing flaws. The story is loosely based on two women who lived and loved each other in the 1800's. Sweet love story well worth reading.
omg...no lesbians were harmed in this book?? no ~sexual deviants~ punished to death???? im so thrilled. Patience and Sarah are very sweet with each other. its not a mind blowing masterpiece but it was refreshing and happy and nice for the most part!
Two women dream of escaping their Puritan community to homestead together out west. This is vibrant and joyful; the language is lovely, with flexible, ardent metaphors and transparent pathos. If some later events are more mundane and focus on (mis)communication, they only serve to explore the relationship's maturation and interactions with the public sphere. The historical setting is evocative, the romance complicated and sincere; it doesn't even feel self-published except that's about lesbian women. I believe that on rare occasion an author than exceed their native talent--can exceed, honestly, any reasonable expectation from a story. This does that. It's difficult to express my feelings about this book without sounding hyperbolic, but Patience & Sarah is emotive, invaluable, and quietly transcendent; and I loved it in every word.
