Meh. I think this is the last book I’ll read in this series. I usually love Preston & Child books but I’m just not connecting with these stories. I’m disappointed because I love that the protagonists are two young women. But I kinda don’t really like them?!? I think it’s because they are both young and make mistakes and are unsure of themselves. Maybe I was expecting Agent Pendegast levels of expertise.
While both women are extremely intelligent, some of their actions are so frustrating! Nora sometimes seems like she’s a borderline sociopath. I realize that it’s probably realistic that Corrie encounters people who are sexist or who doubt her because of her age but do we need to go through that in EVERY book?
Also where’s the weird stuff? Even when Preston and Child write separately there is almost always something unexpected, spooky, preternatural, creepypasta, experimental high tech, etc.
I didn’t care about the mystery…probably because I knew there would be some mundane explanation. I absolutely loath Nora’s brother and the sub plot with him and his legal troubles was so unnecessary and annoying. There’s not even an enjoyable antagonist. Just boring and mundane. Overall it’s a perfectly fine police procedural. I was hoping the series would develop into something more.
