Jane (4) really liked looking through this book on her own, but then when I read it to her she didn't seem that interested. Good illustrations, okay story.
The 2nd Princess in Black book is a great early chapter book for kids who love princesses but also love action. Even though she is hosting her birthday party the Princess keeps getting called away to fight goat-eating monsters. She does not want her party guests to know her secret identity, so she must keep creating distractions. The colorful illustrations will entice reluctant readers and grown-ups will appreciate many of the princess party guests are different races and nationalities.

I love the Princess in Black series! These stories are a lot of fun.
The Princess has to hide her secret identity as a crime fighting princess from all of her princess friends. When her monster alarm rings, she must find an excuse to duck away and fight the monster.
The monsters were so funny. They only go after the goats in a neighbouring field. The Princess is able to go and fight them, but she comes back to her party more and more disheveled each time, drawing suspicion from some of the princesses. However, she always gets the job done.
This is a cute story for young kids. I think adults would enjoy it too, because I kept smiling while I read it.

All of my first graders love these books. I use them as read alouds. Even the boys adore them. I had 5 kids choose to do their book reviews on this book! It is fun and the pictures are beautiful.
I think my favorite part of this series is Shannon Hale's amazing superhero move alliterations: TIARA TRIP! and ROYAL WRANGLE! and (my perennial fave) TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE SMASH!
The girl power and the quiet multiculturalism is pretty darn great, too. As are LeUyen Pham's incredibly cheeky and subtly detailed illustrations.
Will always recommend this early chapter book. To everyone. All the people need to read it.

Being a superhero and a princess at the same time can be pretty tough, especially when you're trying to host a party! It's Princess Magnolia's birthday, and all of her fellow princess friends have come to help her celebrate. The only problem is, her monster alarm keeps going off in the middle of her party? Can Magnolia send all the monsters back to monster land and still throw the perfect princess party without arousing any suspicion?
This book gives us a great look at the diverse world of princesses, and it's great to see so many princesses from different ethnicities and cultures being represented.

*3.5 stars to split the difference between the kids
6-year-old daughter says:
3 stars because there were tons of monster and I only like one monster and one battle.
4-year-old son says:
I liked it because the monsters were different colors but I didn't like the last monster that much because it was pink. I liked the book quite a bit.
Mom says:
Poor Princess Marigold can't have her party because monsters keep escaping Monster Land. These books are adorable and fun.
