Every July, since I first read this book, I reread Two Lynchings on Cerro Maravilla. Every year, I cry at the beginning. Manny Suarez makes very clear from the start that the murder of two unarmed young men is taking place at the hands of police. From there, the book follows the investigation of the cover up of those murders and the perpetrators of that cover-up, both federal and local. The author has left a legacy of the finest investigative journalism, written in engrossing prose. Puerto Rico can never repay the debt we owe Manny Suarez for supplying the reading public with this masterpiece of history. (July 25, 2014)
July 25, 2020 - Reading this book as uprisings against police killings are taking place in the United States is a surreal experience. This time, I paid extra attention to the very detailed, exhaustive (and exhausting) chronicle of all the investigations - federal and local.
