I went back to Reacher because my next Diane Capri, [b:Jack and Joe|25936138|Jack and Joe (Hunt for Reacher #3)|Diane Capri|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1437275187l/25936138._SY75_.jpg|45832679] references this book and I wanted to have the background. A quick read, and one I was engaged with, but I still don't love Reacher. Like my first foray into the books, I wouldn't have minded him not living to see the next book. He's a well written prick, but a prick. I think I'll continue to read for the Capri overlap, but don't feel any particular itch to finish the Reacher series.

I enjoyed Summer and how that relationship evolved as they worked to solve the murders they were faced with at Fort Bird. The history lover in me loved the setting of this book amid the fall of the Berlin Wall & capture of Noriega, two events I recall vividly.

Spoiler Having just read [b:Get Back Jack|18475014|Get Back Jack (Hunt For Reacher #2)|Diane Capri|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1378774769l/18475014._SY75_.jpg|26142690], it was very confusing to have Franz alive since he was dead in that book. Didn't realize Capri's books didn't follow Reacher sequentially.

A must-read for fans of the 110th! This prequel takes us back to Reacher’s military days, offering an in-depth look at his role as an MP and his interactions with his old unit. The mystery is compelling, the military intrigue is high, and the look at Reacher in uniform adds so much depth to his character. This one is particularly satisfying for those who enjoy seeing the linkages between books.

Classic reacher

In my experience, there are OK Jack Reacher books, there are good Jack Reacher books, and there are brilliant Jack Reacher books.
Books where you spend your whole time thinking everyone did the thing, second-guessing where Reacher will head next (and being wrong), books where you find yourself still up at 1am 'cos you can't put the damn thing down.
The Enemy is one of those books.
Taking us back to Reacher's army days, Child drops us into a world of military intrigue and family angst as Reacher crosses the Atlantic several times as he chases down the bad guys and pops in to see his mum.
The beauty of this book is it works on two levels.
For the thriller fan, it's a gripping page-turner that'll keep you guessing (I got one tiny thing right - a personal best when Child hits this genre).
For the Reacher fan, it fills in some of the blanks. We meet people Reacher deals with in later life (and earlier books), we get an insight into his relationship with his brother, we see his his mother shaped his thinking far more than she ever knew, and we see where his moral compass sat when he was a younger man.
Probably the best Reacher novel so far (given I've started at the beginning...).

My first Lee Child and it was pretty good. What took me so long I do not know. I don't know where this one fits in the timeline of Jack Reacher's amazing career but he is a young-ish man. It is New Year's Eve 1999, Jack is in the MP and has been mysteriously transferred to an army base in North Carolina. His night takes an interesting turn when a general dies of a heart attack in a nearby motel room. I have no idea if this is awesome typical Jack Reachet or not, but I thought it great.
