The wrap up was overly convoluted but the rest was good.

I had high hopes for this book as it sounded right up my alley - an isolated location with a group of friends who hadn’t seen each other for ages, then one of them turns up dead. However, it didn’t live up to my expectations. The opening chapter set the story of to a good start, but everything after that seemed to drag it down. I also found most of the characters to be unlikeable and off-putting; normally I love an unlikeable character but it’s a little different when they make up most of the characters. I know that people will like this, but it was just a miss for me.

Thanks to Bookouture & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was not for me, it wasn't directly bad just dull. I think its a good book for those who like slower thrillers where you can see the plot twist coming, I just don't care for those kinds of books. I also didn't really care about any of the characters wich made me not care about anything that happend.

The Snowstorm is a standalone mystery thriller by author, Triona Walsh. This is my first book by this author, but when I read the blurb I just knew this one would be great. Set on a small Irish island, this chilling and twist filled mystery thriller will leave your heart racing and the pages flying by. I enjoyed the fast-paced story and isolated setting which is the perfect combination for a murder mystery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the author pulls another twist. I loved the concept of old friends reuniting and having to discover who to trust. The only thing that would have really elevated this already great story would have been to learn more backstory about these characters.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ -- Decent cover on this one.

The Snowstorm by Triona Walsh is a thrilling mystery novel that takes place on an isolated Irish island during a New Year's Eve snowstorm...

Six friends reunite after ten years, only to find that their once tight-knit friendship has been replaced by secrets and jealousy. When a dead body is discovered, the group realizes that one of them must be a killer. As the snowstorm intensifies and they become trapped with no electricity or phone signal, trust becomes scarce and suspicions rise.

This author does an excellent job of creating an atmospheric setting that adds to the tension of the story. The cold, bleak, isolated island feels like another character in the book. The writing itself is well done, and the pace keeps you turning pages. Although there are some twists and turns in the plot, it was fairly easy for me to figure out who the killer was with such a small pool of suspects. However, this did not detract too much from my overall enjoyment of the book.

Overall, The Snowstorm is a super engaging read that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good mystery novel. The author's ability to create suspenseful settings and well-written characters makes this book worth reading.

A cabin. A group of old friends. A storm. An isolated island. No help on the way. Whodunit.

I love the cover. The red cabin against the white snow.

A great setting and premise. All the things I love in a good mystery thriller. I read this book in tandem with the audiobook. This is a very slow burn and I'm not certain how I would have fared if I had only read the text version. I admit it's likely I would have struggled to stay engaged but the audio kept me going.

The characters were okay but I didn't connect with and love them as much as I would have liked. I didn't find myself caring about what happened to them - which is a real shame!

But my main disappointment was the ending and exposing whodunit. The ending was just Cara telling everyone who committed the murder and how they did it. And then the murderer just reiterates that by also telling everyone how and why they did it.

This was a fun mystery to read! We are brought along as Cara tries to solve the mystery of who killed her friend Maura. As the book unfolds you learn secrets about the characters and follow the clues left behind. It was a solid story that wrapped everything up by the end. Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy.

My thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Triona Walsh for giving me the chance to read this wonderfully crafted thriller. Cara is the only Garda on an island at the edge of the world; a tourist attraction in the summer months becomes isolated for a few days due to a violent snowstorm. While the storm is raging, a crime is discovered and it falls to Cara to investigate since there is no way any detective can come over from mainland to investigate. With humble resources and no experience in the forensic science Cara gets to the truth; her best friend is killed by one of her other friends. While reading I kept going back and forth between characters trying to speculate who the killer is but I couldn’t for the life of me guess. The best part of the novel was the reveal at the end. The description of the landscape is so amazing it felt I was there. A very amusing, suspenseful read.

There is something about winter that always puts me in the mood for a really well done thriller. So, when I found this book, it seemed like the perfect match for my winter mood. Set on a small island in the middle of a snowstorm, this book was claustrophobic, bordering on unsettling from the start of the opening scene. That strong start really set high hopes for the rest of the book.

Those high hopes were met through a majority of the beginning of the book. It was fast paced, interesting and the stakes were high enough where I couldn’t put the book down. However, that strong start washed away somewhere near the middle of the book. The evidence and connection between the characters became repetitive and less believable the more time that they spent together. After the initial excitement wore off, I still couldn’t put the book down because I kept waiting for that excitement to come back for a strong ending. Unfortunately, it didn't. The entire ending felt unnecessarily drawn out. I kept waiting for the last page of the book, but it took forever to finally hit that point.

I did enjoy the small town island feel. It was fascinating to watch the characters interact with the locals after being away from the island for so long. The memories that pop up for each person and the ways that memories can be twisted over time really took its toll on the town and its inhabitants.

In a book with so many characters, there is usually a strong sense of connection and purpose between each of the characters. In The Snowstorm, the connections were forced and only felt natural for the beginning. There was so much that happened outside of what I was able to piece together, that I didn't have my usual fun of trying to solve the mystery alongside the detective.

Overall, I enjoyed the timing of this book and would recommend it for anyone looking for a wintery thriller, it definitely lives up to the claustrophobic feel of being stuck in a snowstorm.

3.5/5 rounded up because I enjoyed the setting so much.
