The science fiction bits of this story were okay. The psychological bits sucked. Almost all the characters seemed to be jerks, and the plot was weak.

I’m rolling through a bunch of the SF Masterworks series. This one was written in the 50s or 60s but that’s not why it ended up just marginal. The premise was really engaging, an unknown object found on the moon (before man had actually landed there) and a type of radio teleporter to get men there to evaluate this object. However, that part of the storyline ends up playing a small part in the book and it instead revolves around a triangular relationship between two guys and a girl, manhood, and identity (these radio teleported copies). Unfortunately the lack of plot focus made it much less interesting.

Story: 6 / 10
Characters: 8
Setting: 7
Prose: 4
An incredibly strong start, but irrelevancies detracted from the story. In the end, the book is a bit obscure.

It's pulpy (hell it's 1960) but it's got a good readability level, and really engaging characters and plotting, with some philosophising about the issues here and there without getting bogged down.
Surprisingly good.
