I learned so much from this book, and the author really encouraged the reader to view history through other lenses. Should be a must-read for Americans or at the very least be taught in school.

Ableism is a well worn pathway to all the other isms. But once you ring the Bell (pun intended and also f that guy) you can’t unring it. The book provides a very general outline but is a god starting point.

An indispensable record of the joys, struggles, and sorrows of disabled life in America. I will be re-reading my copy often.

Really interesting and well-done work! But the short page count hurts as the author doesn't have time to go into detail. I feel like each chapter could've been its own book. This is a ground-breaking piece of history writing, but I hope we get much, much more work in this field because this book just barely scratches the surface.

A very digestible read about the history of disability in America. I really appreciated that the discussion started in the pre-European introduction era which gave some interesting context.

The book was brief, which at times was its detriment. While it gave a nice framework for the key issues and legislation at moments in time, it seemed very surface level. This is most noticeable in the last chapter, in which only three or so pages touch on the ADA.

I think it’s a wonderful primer for someone interested in the topic but it definitely sparks the need for further study.

A good introduction to viewing United States' history through the lens of disability. While the latter part of the twentieth century feels a bit rushed, as the development of the ADA is sketched out and implemented, the first half of the book, and its dive into the changing perception of disability through colonization and war, makes this a more than handy tome. Get it from the library, and have your eyes opened about the law and disability.
