I didn't like this book as much as the others in the series. I felt like Ian was an idiot and I couldn't root for him as a hero. Yes, he gets the girl, but I think Sileas could have done better.

I’m omitting stars on this one, since I kind of picked this book up on accident. It’s not something I would normally read, so it seems unfair to rate it based on my tastes. (Kind of like that thing about judging a fish by its ability climb trees?)
It was a historical romance/bodice ripper set in the Scottish highlands with an alpha warrior hero and an ugly-duckling-turned-swan heroine. Perhaps a little too sexually graphic for “romance,” but not quite graphic enough to be “erotica” - but then I have no idea what a standard romance novel reads like these days so ????

While Sìleas may be strong and commendable Ian is quite a prig. I understand a boy not wanting to marry nothing but a child. To however abandon family and stay away because you want a comely lass is disgusting. Made all the more disgusting when that little girl is abused and supposedly your friend. Sìleas had the great misfortune of falling for a boy who showed her kindness, a boy who was something no one else would be for her. That love made her fall for a man that leaves everything else to be desired. Yes he grows to love her, but that would of never happened if she were not beautiful. I found myself loving many characters but finding Ian to be a worthless man who believes himself to be a gift.

I received a copy of this to review.
It was a first for me from this author and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
I am not usually a fan of the scottish historical romance books because of the language but I quite liked it in this one...in fact I couldnt help but do a scottish accent in my head as I was reading this(luckily not out loud, because noone wants to hear me attempt it lol).
I really loved the characters of Ian and Sileas and they were definately well suited, my only complaint is that they seemed to sort their problems out quickly, I would have liked for their story to have been drawn out a bit more, but there was a lot going on in the book and the storyline so I can understand why it wasnt.

It was very well written and was very enjoyable and easy to read and if you enjoy authors such as Hannah Howell, Sabrina Jeffries then I would recommend this book and author.
This was a great start to a series and I really look forward to reading the next book The Sinner and all of the others regarding his cousins :)
It will not be the last book I read from this author.

AUDIO version: the narration was good but at 75%, I still didn't care that much about the MCs. Boring.

After 5 years of fighting abroad Ian returns to his wife that he was forced to marry at knife point and a father who has lost his leg. However, his wife has grown up and is no longer an awkward girl and thinks she deserves more than a reluctant husband. Can Ian win his wife and save his clan?

Maybe more of 3.5, I placed a hold on the next when I finished this.

4 Stars - First Read (2016)
2.5 Stars - Second Read (2024)

I was a little unsure about rereading this because the reviews made it sound horrible, tbh. Which might have been a bit over dramatic in my opinion.

I remembered liking this book and the basis of the story but not much else. So, while I did enjoy rereading this I didn't enjoy it as much as I did with my first impression years ago.

I liked the heroine Sìleas. I wish she had gave Ian a tougher time trying to convince her to be his wife. While I did enjoy that she didn't just give in to him easily after he returned I didn't like that it still felt like Ian got off easy with his nonchalant and charming ways.

That's likely because this book held the one trope I've come to hate with a burning passion and that was the fact Sìleas had "supposedly" been in love with Ian since she was a child.

This is the first I've read from this author and I'm really excited for the rest of the series!  I should have hated Ian, especially in the beginning, but instead I was excited to see how he would make it our to our FMC, Sileas, who was amazing.  In some ways she was a hopeless romantic, but at the same time she was a strong woman.  I loved reading about a heroine who had so much dimension, being strong, insecure, vulnerable, caring.  She didn't feel like some trope or cookie cutter heroine.  I loved the who gang, and can't wait for the rest of the boys' books.
