Sisters

Lily Tuck

3.27 AVERAGE

The "sisters" in Sisters by Lily Tuck are two women who are at different times married to the same man. This is a book of wife number 2's obsession. The story is a stream of consciousness tell-all that sounds like it comes from a therapist's couch. The book is memorable for its unlikable main character, its short length, and its unusual approach. Unfortunately, certain turns of this obsession ultimately make this not the book for me.

I was more interested in the relationship between the two women than the relationship between the woman and her husband. The prose is crisp and a pleasure to read, but the twist at the end was melodramatic.

"First and second wives are like sisters."

This book explores the complicated relationship that a woman has with her husband's ex. She becomes obsessed with the woman before her and can feel her presence in everything she does. Tuck likens this relationship to that of sisters. Two women, who in a sense, have shared a man. They know him intimately; his wants, desires, talents...etc. These two women are now bonded for life.

This was a very short read but it was interesting nonetheless.

A quick, interesting read.

I’m glad this was short because it wasn’t my cup of tea.

I loved this book! It's not that anything unbelievable happened, but the build-up to the end was so well done. I don't know who I was rooting for more, as Tuck made her characters so believable and sympathetic. I read it so quickly and it became one of my favourites immediately.

There's just not much here I liked. Characters are pretty awful, storyline is thin, surprises aren't much. I guess the best thing I can say is that this was a very quick read, so I was finished with it in an evening.

Meh...it was ok. It does explain what it's like to be the second wife, to wonder what she was like and how she compares to you in all things. It can be a difficult thing for sure. I guess I would have preferred more of a story instead of someone's inner thought.

Skip the bad haiku today.

If he does it WITH you, he will do it TO you. I guess that's a spoiler.
