I loved this book. Nafisi is such a beautiful writer, and the story of her life in an upper-class Iranian family before and after the Revolution was gripping. Her mother was a troubled and vulnerable woman. I admit I don't know how much of my feelings for the book were influenced by my Dad being from Iran, but I think this book has a lot to offer anyone.
This is a memoir by the author of Reading Lolita in Tehran. I remember liking 'Lolita' though I didn't always get all the literary references and I liked Nafisi's talk at the DC Book Festival but she does use a lot of words to make her point sometimes. She can get a bit tedious. But I enjoyed this memoir and learned quite a lot about the history of Iran without having to actually read history. One more reminder that totalitarian regimes are not ideal.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the history of the author's family intertwined with the political history of Iran (by no means comprehensive). I did think it meandered a bit, focusing too much on the author's mother's "quirks." But it was a good read.
Very good book. I like the way the book weaved the relationship between a mother and her daughter and the history of Iran and the Iranian Revolution. Also, there were a lot of pictures in the book.

this book was okay, but just okay, and i expected more. the time line was confusing, and at times seemed contradictory. the author was a bit, um, shallow. though she did mention the tragedy of the iran/iraq war, it felt like she was looking at it through a window rather than living it. i read it on the heels of a similar book written by an afghan woman during the russion occupation, so i couldn't help comparing the two. this one was sorely lacking. i haven't read reading lolita in tehran, but i hope for more meat.
