Very cute. I knew what was coming but it was a nice easy read.

A sweet story but a little predictable
Spoiler Was there anybody who didn't guess Ben was Buddy as soon as you found out Buddy was the horses' name? It does seem to be the unspoken rule of historical fiction that if a young girl sleeps with a man once, and only once, she is pregnant. I was a little surprised at first when it seemed like Dallas wasn't following the rule and so it wasn't a big shock that turned out she actually did.

The Patchwork Bride by Sandra Dallas tells the story of Nell, the late 1800s version of The Runaway Bride. Nell is a modern woman of the 1800s, yet like women of that time, must rely on marriage for security. She meets Buddy at the ranch her Aunt Lucy works at, yet runs from him after an argument. Next is James, who she meets in Denver, but who turns out to be not what she thinks he is. Lastly, there is Wade, her grandparents banker friend in Kansas City, who just doesn’t make her heart beat. The story is told to June by her grandmother, Ellen, when June runs from her fiancée. It’s a good story, with a nice twist at the end that I did not see coming.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was kind of confusing with Ellen telling the story of Nell (whom you really think is probably Ellen and of course you find out it is in the end). I didn't get the whole thing with the child in the end. How did she tell the stories about Nell without ever mentioning a child??

** Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for providing a copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaway program **

I have read most all of Sandra Dallas’ books and I feel that this book lacks the depth of character that made her previous books so enjoyable for me to read. That being said, I found this to be an enjoyable, light reading experience about love and life.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for the free review copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.

Right away, I was drawn into this book by the wonderful descriptions Dallas gives of the people and places. I wanted to know what was going on with Ben, Ellen, and June.

The grandma/granddaughter relationship in this novel was so fantastic. I thought about my grandma the whole time and about the stories that she tells. Ellen doesn't tell June what to do, she lets her think through the decisions by telling the stories of Nell running away from three different men. I really loved how when Nell's story was being told, the reader was completely immersed in that place, but still knew that she was going to run. I think that knowing that information, in this case, helped add suspense to see how Nell ended up later in life. I loved that Nell was a strong woman.

I did figure out one of the surprises, but that didn't take away from the novel. The only complaint I have is that the last big surprise, which I didn't figure out, was a little harder to put into the plot. If you read it, you may understand what I mean.
This is a historical fiction novel that shows how everything will work out how it's supposed to.

I liked it fine. It was a bit slow for my taste and it definitely offended my feminist sensibilities. The book is set on a farm, where a granddaughter, June, has runaway from her soon to be husband and her grandmother begins to tell her the story of another runaway bride, Nell. Nell makes a series of mistakes all on her big quest to fulfill her life's purpose of finding a husband. From New Mexico, to Kansas, to Denver, and back to Kansas will Nell ever find her one true love?

This was a quick read. The story hooked me right away and I loved the long and winding path it took to a "happy ending."
