Despite The Dream striking me as abrupt, I enjoyed the descriptions; architecture and embroidery occupy the majority of such. Again Zola tips his hat to Balzac. Still, I couldn't shake the thought upon completion, that the novel could've been Thérèse Raquin's last thoughts after she swallowed her poison.
I think that this might be the worst of Zola's novels I've read. I'm normally a big fan but I couldn't wait for it to finish. Luckily it's a short novel. If you like learning about 19th century embroidery and church vestments, this is the book for you. Otherwise it's a fairly straightforward melodrama.

‘Wasn’t this little spot grace itself? Woven out of stories she had learnt by heart, and the faith imbibed with them, and the mystical otherworld that surrounded her, this was a realm of invisible presences, in which miracles appeared perfectly normal and a natural part of her daily existence. Her surroundings armed her for the battle of life, as grace armed the martyrs. And she too was helping to create this little place, without realising; it grew out of an imagination over heated by fables, out of the unconscious desires of puberty; it was swollen by her ignorance, and was generated by the unknown dwelling in her and in the things around her. Everything came out of her, and returned into her; mankind created God to save mankind, nothing existed apart from the dream.’ 🤍
Un Zola sans mort, sans agression sexuelle, sans violence, sans propagande anti-communiste.

One of the more simple and easy to follow of the Rougon-Macquarts I have read so far. Not quite sure what he was trying to say? Felt a bit like a religious parable (I'm guessing that's the point?)
Found by the cathedral doors in a huge drift of snow Angelique enters a new life with a pious and humble couple. The Golden Legends fill her mind and heart and imagination and she dreams of true love sweeping her away. The rescue seems to involve saving her laundry from flowing downstream but the other particulars seem to come true. An exploration of hereditary traits and environments happen here too in this gentle, dreamy novel and I found this edition's foreword & introduction helpful (after reading the novel of course, why can't they put these things at the end where they belong rather than potentially spoiling the plot??) in placing this novel in the context of the author's other works and literary intentions.
