Comprehensive puts it well. There was an effort during the 1980s to engage a number of historians to prepare a new history of the Church that would update Robert's work. It went nowhere and was discontinued after several years.

In the words of the editor for the proposed new Church history,

"We found that it was difficult to improve upon Roberts."

The Comprehensive History of the Church remains the single most authoritative work in its fieid.
