An interesting read into some of the things doctors come up against in a womens prison. Doctor Brown deals with things from drug and alcohol misuse, right through to small things like athletes foot. I did feel for some women who were failed by the system and felt safer inside than being on the outside and dealing with abusive partners.

This is a tough one to rate/review because there were some parts of it that were really good, but equally some parts that had me saying HMMM. Definitely some dodgy parts (eg, framing 'women's rights' and 'trans women's rights' as two opposing sides and not, in fact, the actual same thing!!!! and completely disregarding the harm that trans women may also have experienced from men!!!). However, I don't want to disregard the whole book, because there were also some parts that I really vibed with, and that I'm really glad were in a book that has caught some mainstream attention (eg, the parts looking at the impact of trauma on offending and the harm imprisonment can cause). I would, though, like to know a LOT more about the ethics and consent used in sharing individual's stories.

Really informative and interesting book, really opened my eyes to the backstory of many prisoners. Only criticism is that the chapters were too long.
Topics covered include drugs, self harm, suicide, rape, sexual abuse, child abide, murder
