A little bit gruesome at the beginning and I nearly stopped but am pleased I didn’t as it was a really clever plot.

I quite enjoyed this largely police procedural. It has a lot of plot twists though they did not surprise me much - just at the margins.
What I enjoyed was the quality of the characterisations. Each of the major players is complex and vulnerable. As a mere male, I was often struck by the female author’s insight that I recognised would have been highly unlikely for me to make. I valued that.
Over all it is a reasonably comfortable read, though the various crimes are horrendous and the one that gets things started, particularly horrific.
Bye Bye Baby by Fiona McIntosh is the first in the DCI Hawksworth series. There are enough pointers to a longer story arc to have me occasionally return when I want something not too demanding.

Graphic: Violence
I am years late to the DCI Jack Hawksworth crime thriller party, and I definitely wish I'd read this sooner!
In this novel, Fiona McIntosh delivers everything you could want in a crime novel - a sophisticated layered storyline, a cast of characters with their own set of challenges (aside from solving the crime), and villains you want to despise and do, but you also feel some empathy for them. When bad things happen to good people, it changes them, sometimes forever!
A great read that I devoured in two days and I've already got the next book in the series ready to go!

I loved this book and the introduction of Jack Hawskwort - my ONLY negative is that at over 550 pages it was very very long, that being said I loved the depth of characters and the unfolding of the story and cant wait for the next installment.
