Lmao, me literally two reviews ago: "Garo is the main character." Then he proceeds to disappear of the face off the Earth. I think this also marks the first issue without a single Saitama appearance? Or anything from the Saitama group. So...that probably tells you how far the series has come from its roots.
We're in primetime battle territory now, also known as the part of OPM I find has the potential to become numbing very quickly, so let's size up what we have this issue.
Battle #1: Atomic Samurai vs. Rhino Wrestler.
Over in about three minutes, automatically making it one of the better Manga fights. It's just big splash pages for this one, as AS shatters Rhino with a single move. The more larger and more punch-y the images become during fights, the more I like them (hence why the Boros fight will likely remain the GOAT - enormous images capturing unfathomable chaos), so Rhino Wrestler's defeat gets the a-okay from me. It's better than the SWOOSH-fest it could have been.
Speaking of which...
Battle #2: Flashy Flash vs. Those Samurai Guys
OPM fights are often renowned for their blistering speed, but here the intensity of the fight breaks even Murata's excellent artistic skills. This chapter is mostly gibberish, both visually and narratively. Every page is a screaming collection of action lines, and I have exactly zero knowledge about Flashy Flash to give even a molecule of a shit about whether he makes it out alive. One of the few fights I've read where I just started flicking through pages to get to the end. Luckily, it doesn't last very long.
Battle #3: Child Emperor vs. Just A Whole Bunch Of Peeps
Hey look, a character whose fighting style allows ONE to come up with batshit crazy ideas. We've gotten close to this kind of fight with Captain Mizuki's baton pass, but Child Emperor takes the cake for extremely entertaining gadgetry. Taking down Bird Person in three seconds with a invisible shield is *chef's kiss*, the pencil missiles are very dumb and I like it, and his final Gundam-style assemble sequence is legit - a great, hefty punchline to the Volume, and a cool tease of the smackdown to come. It still suffers from the usual Hero Association problem of 'not actually connected to Saitama, Garo, or the stuff I really care about', but as far as OPM Smash Bros. contests go, this is one of the better ones.
Anyhoo, that's Volume 21, in which things definitely happen, and yet sort of don't. Taro is in the process of finally being extracted, Rhino and the Samurai are down, and Child Emperor finally shows the full extent of his Class-S abilities. But I've never been as taken by the Human Association spectacle chapters of OPM as other readers are, so am hoping that a bit more story decides to show up in the next book. I looked ahead at some of the other chapters in this arc, and I know my boy Saitama is actually going to show up against King Orochi, so here's hoping his presence in the narrative starts to materialise soon, because I'm curious to see how ONE slots him into this chaos.

Look, if you have read 21 volumes in, you get what the series is about LOL. This is more of that.

Wow, another volume of One-Punch Man...without One-Punch Man even being in it.
The fights in this one are cool, I guess? But this arc is stretching on and on forever, and I really don't care about all these other heroes a lot. It's sort of hard to when we know nothing about them or their backgrounds, only their names.

Good fights, and probably the first volume to not have Saitama at all.
This manga went full shounen and I fear there's no way back. Still good, but not as unique.
