There's been some updates to this that didn't work for me - fake ads for eg. But overall, it's so wonderfully dark and funny! This is the kind of kid book that really does benefit by a kid reading it, but I learnt from it and enjoyed it. A pleasant reminder of my redehg trip to Jorvik. I feel like it will stand up to rereads, especially as far as the quizzes went!
3.5 stars. I enjoyed this a lot more than the Rotten Romans one.
Viking culture has always been very story based. Not much was written down or recorded. People just told stories to each other and these stories were passed on from generation to generation.
What I loved about this book is that a lot of the information is given to us in the form of an actual story. The author is trying to teach us about the Vikings through their own style so to speak. And I really appreciated that!

This was my 39th book finished in 2024.
I don't think it did a very good job of defining the Vikings... I still don't think I could define exactly who they were and where they lived / originated.
It was full of a lot of lengthy stories and poems, and far too many quizzes - I found it a bit dull and most of it felt like filler.
I also thought there were far too many chapters dedicated to the Saxons - there's already a separate book about them!

Another instalment in my Horrible Histories journey is now complete and this time it focused on the Vikings and their time in England from their invasion to their defeat at the hands of the Normans under William in 1066.
I remember learning about the Vikings in primary school and going on a trip to York to the Viking museum there and being utterly intrigued and enthralled by these people from our history. And my mum got me a copy of this book to read and continue my interest in them and to help me learn more and more, which I will be forever grateful for.
I also remember the things on the TV saying that if your finger bent a certain way then you had Viking blood, but I always thought that was a bit of hokum. Especially as statistically we’re all likely to have Viking blood in us.
