I was iffy about the concept of a romance between a bookstore owner and the property developer that evicted her from her store and for good reason.
There’s no nuanced conversation about the fact that Jane and her family dedicate their lives to buying older buildings and “modernizing” them. Jane only feels guilty because she’s evicting the woman she’s attracted to and has to see how sad she is to see her building demolished, but she never extends the same sympathy to other people she has evicted from their stores or homes. Even when feeling bad for Rosie, she keeps justifying it because it’s just business and not personal.
If the best defense you have for making areas unlivable for their previous inhabitants because you see an opportunity for profit is “because Jesus Christ, it's not like you defend rapists or something. We renovate buildings,” then… I don’t know what to say to you.

This story is so CUTE! Very RomCom, but not cheesy in the everything is perfect way. More like, this is life, it's not perfect, but it can be beautiful if you make the best of it.

Every time they say BPD I think they mean Borderline Personality Disorder.
I love that there are no toxic plot points. No cheating, no narcissism, no lying, just cute relationship. And I loved that all of the problems they faced did not center around their queerness. Both characters were sweet and likable. Jane being so awkwardly introverted is so super relatable and made me feel emotional and good.
But also, I’m so on Rosie side where she’s super against gentrification of beautiful old buildings and family owned businesses, obviously.

I'm a sucker for a WLW romance let's start there. This book definitely doesn't pack in a lot of tropes but Grumpy x Sunshine is always a winner.
I was so in love with Rosie immediately after her introduction, (who doesn't love a pretty bookstore owner with an adorable dog friend?) but I really enjoy that she is a flawed character in her own way. She has so much passion for her business and love for books but throughout the story I can't help but feel like she is almost blinded by that love that she overreacts at times.
Jane is the standard Grumpy business woman with no pets and no friends but somehow manages to steal the heart (with a lot of emotional effort) of little miss Sunshine Rosie. I wish Jane had been given a little more personality considering she seemed to have very few (if any hobbies) outside of writing. I couldn't help but feel endeared to her introverted self sufficiency. I also would have loved more interaction between Jane and her niece because they had such a sweet relationship.
Overall this was a really feel good WLW romance with just a hint of angst but a really heartwarming ending that felt like a very organic way to wrap up their love story.

This was very pleasing, although there were some odd moments that made me think ‘that’s… not how it works’ about book selling (but hey, maybe this is what this author experienced, and if so, she was a lot luckier than me). The romance is cute rather than super steamy, but it’s very sweet and the two characters are likeable. There’s no quick fix to the tension introduced, which feels more real than the usual ‘and then they solved their problem in harmony together’. This book also made me look up ‘undiscovered Glasgow’ after the lead pair go in a date in ‘undiscovered New York’. There is a cute pupper (I do not like dogs, this is a big compliment). Overall, cute, breezy romance and whilst the story had some repeats, a light, fun read.
