Lenin's simple but effective argument for the organisation of Marxist revolutionaries on the basis of clear political ideas and strong links with the class struggles of workers via a workers' newspaper. The founder of Bolshevism uses his characteristic wit and incisive thought to criticise reactionary tendencies creeping through the Russian revolutionary movement and draw a clear line between opportunism/reformism and Marxism.

Chapter 3 and 4 of this book are a must read for those who wish to understand modern Marxist-Leninism. However, the book is a product of the time and is centred around issues, pamphlets, newspapers, etc which are far separated from the modern reader.

At its core, Lenin argues against Economism which he argues promotes trade-union struggles at the expense of an overall political movement. He advocates for the creation of the Vanguard Party to spread class consciousness amongst the people — and denounces the Social Democrats (who he compares to terrorists in their waiting for spontaneity over active organising) for their decision to idly wait for socialist revolution.

The model of a vanguard party is at the heart of every sucessful communist movement throughout history and Lenin’s theory would br engraved in the annals of history with the October Revolution.

Good stuff! Hard to read tho. Almost gave it an extra half star cuz he’s so sassy

I found it funny that this one started out like a livejournal post: 'forgive the quality, I was rushing and had other really important stuff going on.'

Not particularly illuminating. Hindsight is 2023, it would seem. Pretty dull overall - so if you know much about the subject, feel free to skip it. This one is definitely heavily dependent on the context and cultural/societal environment it sprang from.

There are overlapping events, one could argue, but if you really think about it... it doesn’t really stack up today.

There’s a particular sense of it being largely a retaliation piece, specifically targeted. So read something else. Newer writers. Clearer ones.

We really lost nothing when we started publishing Pop Science and Smart Thinking. It really does boil out the fluff.
