I enjoyed this much more than the previous books. More an adventure time travel romp than about the history department doing ridiculously stupid things time and time again.

I'm still not Max's biggest fan but she was far less irritating in this installment but you're still left thinking how dumb they all are from time to time (forgot there's a tracker inside you). and how unbelievable the events get (the A team style shoot out at the end). Fortunately I only have one book left in my impulse bulk buy but unless that improves dramatically then I think I'll move on...

This is the fourth story in the St Mary's Chronicles and has to advance the story from the catastrophic ending of book 3. I'm not sure if I'm 100% for the way they did it, but that's how it starts and this one is the most action packed of all the books.

The Time Police are after Max and she and Leon try to keep one step ahead of them as they jump across time, sometimes they are only half a step ahead.

The main adventure is set in Pompeii and, as usual, nothing goes to plan. This all builds up to the final fight, which may well be the final fight of all.

I really enjoy this series. As the books go on the characters develop. Max is not the young newcomer from the first book anymore. The supporting cast are well rounded and bring more to the story with their St Mary's quirks.

I liked this book, but I will have to say this book a little hard for me to read. This book is so different from the rest and I missed the ensemble cast. But with that said I am writing this review after I have read on in the series and I feel it really picks back up after this book. If you feel how I did reading this just wait and the St. Mary ensemble cast returns in full force in the next book.

Having been run through with a Sword at Agincourt, Max has been saved by Mrs Partridge by moving her to a parallel timeline in which she is dead, but in which Leon is alive.

Max is effectively given a second chance to create a life with Leon, forgiving and forgetting past mistakes, unfortunately, before they can do much more than realise this opportunity they are attacked by the Time Police, an organisation that in this world was created to monitor and protect the timeline, something it does ruthlessly by removing any and all anomalies. This results in Max and Leon being chased through time as they try to get away.

Though we get to visit several interesting time periods in this novel, Pompeii and Ancient Egypt to name but two, this is different from the other books as the plot centres around the Time Police and their actions which have repercussions not just for Max and Leon, but for everyone at St. Mary's as well.

This didn't quite reach the heights of the previous book though it does have its moments and the line "as unstoppable as a greased Elephant on a helter-skelter" will live with me for some time to come.

This has been my least favorite so far. It was mostly stressful with not much actual time travel after the initial craziness. I'm going to go ahead and read the next one if the library has it but I hope #5 gets back to the humor and history.

This one was a lot more solemn, a lot less fun than the rest but still couldn't put it down
