I can’t believe they killed off the main character a few chapters into the book! Boy, I did not expect that. Then, they made up this game that was entirely fake but made us readers believe it was real. I was shocked to find that it was fake in the end.
I’m surprised neither Janos nor Harris or Viv died. I was expecting Janos to win.

Definitely a page turner but the plot has so many implausible pays that's it's hard for me to want to come back to this author. Spoiler alert. Terrorists from Yemen build a neutrino detector for billions of dollars in and an accelerator to generate neutrons to then bombard neptuniam to make plutonium. Give me a break.

I'm calling this book a very unconventional look at DC politics. Who's to say every bit of this isn't true? It's creative, a little crazy, and a high-quality thriller. We even get some threads of the espionage genre tangled in for good measure. Who doesn't love that?

I gave up on this one. Started it twice and only ever got half way through. Somewhere along the way I stopped caring about the characters.

Fun (scary?) concept to start with, that Congress staffers bet on and therefore influence minor legislation. From there it becomes a pretty standard relentless killer pursuit story. So that's fun.

I was going through my bookshelves and found a bunch of Brad Meltzer books. I couldn’t remember if I’d read them or not so I started with this one. The first night I started it it didn’t seem familiar but then the second day it was vaguely familiar, one character in particular I felt like I knew where his story went but I still didn’t remember the whole book so I read it all the way through. I’m 99% sure I’ve previously read it. Either way, I enjoyed it.
Set in Washington DC, the staffers and lobbyists have a game going on behind the scenes where bets are placed on little things. Things like whether or not they can get a land sale of a mine in South Dakota into a bill. When Matthew and Harris think their bet is a sure thing the put all their money on the line. But Matthew gets nervous and things spiral out of control. It becomes a lot more than just a fun little game, it becomes life and death.

I enjoyed the story as it progressed, but was somewhat disappointed by the resolution. This is the 3rd Meltzer title I've read and it's becoming a theme for me. The build up, the action, the story line motivate you to keep reading, but in the end, the resolution, the loose ends, the wrap-up just doesn't quite satisfy. If you think about any particular puzzling plot point or dissect it all too much, it all sort of unravels.
When I got to the end and figured out what was behind the game, I was pretty disappointed. Still, I enjoyed reading along the way, the story line did have some merit.

Easily the best of the Meltzer books I've read. My only criticism is the tool used by the killer. Any killer who obsesses about using a weapon that requires such close proximity is a moron.

I picked this up after watching Brad Meltzer's "Decoded", and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the characters, especially Sweet Mocha and a cameo appearance by The Lorax. The plot was twisty, mysterious, and kept me wondering page after page. But Meltzer's true talent, in my humble opinion, was being able to mix D.C. "secrets" into his writing, as if they were common tourist attractions.
