Luck of the Draw: My Story of the Air War in Europe
by Frank Murphy, narrated by Jonas Moore
foreword by Chloe Melas and Elizabeth Murphy
Frank Murphy's memoir is a detailing of the his time leading up to volunteering for military duty and training, his time as an Eighth Air Force navigator, and his almost two years as a WWII POW. First published in 2001, it was republished this year with the addition of forewords by his daughter, Elizabeth Murphy, and his granddaughter, Chloe Melas. The narrator of the audiobook is Jonas Moore and I think his voice is just right for the narration of this book so I looked for information about him to find that he plays Frank Murphy in the TV series "Masters Of The Air" being released this year.
Through his memoir I feel like I got a good feel for the man with the detailed manner in which he told of the events and his memories. I was reminded of my late father who loved to tell me every detail of the small planes he flew. Frank allowed my mind's eye to see the inside of the planes of his crew and the cramped, cold space where he navigated while hunched over his tiny shelf like navigator's table. His descriptions of the battles, his college dorm-like barracks while on base, and the conditions of his time as a POW allowed me to see things very vividly. I have a much better understanding of life as a navigator during WWII and the dismal odds of the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress surviving the war.
First published in 2001, the updated book and audiobook published in Feb 2023.

This is an easy to read and informative recollection of serving as a Navigator with the Mighty Eighth in the skies over Germany.
While I couldn’t help but wish the author had written the work a few years closer to the events, he provides a fascinating insight into life as a Prisoner of War.

This book is so interesting. I seriously can not imagine what these men went through. The beginning takes a bit to get into, but once you're in the book, you want to know what happened. I love how this book is written. I've never really read a book where it's about the actual crew of the planes that were involved in the war. I recommend this book if you are interested in any information about the Second World War. It is very interesting.
